Diseases and health

Start with symptoms, water and urgency

Betta fish diseases can share similar symptoms but have different causes. Check the environment, document what changed and avoid treating a webpage as a veterinary diagnosis.

Careful observation and diagnostic context come before disease-specific treatment decisions.

A safer first response

Use observation to decide urgency before reaching for a treatment.

  1. Test the water

Record temperature, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and any recent maintenance change.

  2. Describe the symptom

Note breathing, appetite, swimming, skin, fins, waste and how quickly the change developed.

  3. Reduce avoidable stress

Correct unsafe water and isolate aggression without making several chemical changes at once.

  4. Escalate when necessary

Rapid decline, severe breathing difficulty, major injury or uncertainty may require an aquatic veterinarian.
